How Children Develop Language

Brenda Geier K-12 Reading Specialist - The research tells us that with the support of parents, caregivers, and early childhood educators, as well as exposure to a literacy-rich environment, children progress from emergent to conventional reading. By interacting through reading aloud and conversation, children are exposed to learning early.  It is very important to read aloud to children and provide opportunities for them to talk about the stories that they hear. As Ander
fff
son, Hiebert, Scott, and Wilkinson (1985) state, "The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children, especially during the preschool years". It helps them develop oral language, cognitive skills, and concepts of print and phonemic awareness.

Children read to develop background knowledge about a range of topics and build a large vocabulary, which aids them in later comprehension and development of reading strategies. They also watch how others read and therefore become familiar with the reading process.  They are constantly learning.

Still, many enter elementary school without a strong background in literacy.  These are the children who are most at risk of developing reading problems.  To provide high chances of success, teachers should be involved in professional development to learn more about child development as it relates to literacy acquisition.

At age 3-4, children begin to "read" their favorite books by themselves.  They begin to use "mock handwriting" (Clay, 1975).  Around age 5, in kindergarten, most children are considered emergent readers.  They make rapid growth in literacy skills if they are exposed to literacy-rich environments (Burns, Griffin, & Snow, 1999). Children may try to recall what has been written or use a picture created with the text to reread instead of using the letter clues (Kamberelis & Sulzby, 1988; Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998).  Although they are beginning to apply phonetic knowledge to create invented spellings, there is a lapse in time before they use phonetic clues to read what they write.

For those parents who choose to home-school their children, an enormous advantage exists to teach children phonetic knowledge, sight words and decoding before they enter school.  This learning advantage gives them power with text that most will not be equipped with.

Most children will become early readers during the first grade.  They commonly look at beginning and ending letters in order to decode unfamiliar words (Clay, 1991; Pinnell, 1996b; Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). They know a small number of sight words.

By second grade, they are transitional readers, able to read unknown text with more independence.  They use meaning, grammatical, and letter cues more fully and use pictures in a limited way while reading (Clay, 1991; International Reading Association & National Association for the Education of Young Children, 1998; Pinnell, 1996b; Snow, burns, & Griffin, 1998).  Transitional spellers can apply spelling rules, patterns, and other strategies to put words on paper.

By the third grade, children are typically fluent readers. They can read for meaning while focusing less on decoding.  They may use transitional and phonetic spellings to spell infrequently used words.

The child's concept of words changes as the child's literacy development evolves.  Children construct their own knowledge thus the difference between how an adult understands reading and writing and how a child understands reading and writing.

Children progress through several categories of phonological skills from rhyming to blending.  The most difficult task involves the complete segmentation of phonemes and manipulation of them to form new words (Griffith & Olson, 1992; Hall & Moats, 1999).  If we begin teaching our children how to segment and manipulate phonemes at the pre-school age, they will have the tools necessary to spell correctly, understand the meaning of words and be able to write and read complete sentences with ease.
Screen and assessment are crucial tools to determine children's literacy needs. Data helps teachers identify children who are developing at a less than normal pace and are in need of intervention.  The earlier, the better to find these children.  Throughout kindergarten and first grade, children can be screened for phonemic awareness, alphabetic k
fff
nowledge, and an understanding of basic language concepts (Texas Education Agency, 1997a).  Performance based assessments, such as observational records of reading and writing, developmental benchmarks, and portfolios can also be used to inform daily teaching (Allington & Cunningham, 1996; Burns, Griffin, & Snow, 1999; international Reading Association & National Association for the Education of Young Children, 1998; Slegers, 1996).

Teachers, parents and caregivers need to understand and support children's emergent literacy and, in later years, children's transition to conventional reading and writing.  Teachers, administrators, and specialists must understand the developmental nature of emergent literacy and early conventional literacy and ensure that the curriculum and instructional materials are appropriate.  Parents need to be educated in child development and support sharing and exploring literacy with their children.  The literacy program needs to support children's social, emotional, aesthetic, maturational, and cognitive needs.  The reading program must be balanced and include quality literature, writing opportunities, development of phonemic awareness and alphabetic knowledge.

To provide opportunities for children's literacy acquisition, schools should work with community groups and libraries to provide informational programs for parents regarding the development of literacy skills in young children.  Teachers should review research on reading and young children and become familiar with Learning to Read and Write:  Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Young Children. (The joint position statement of the International Reading Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children).  All teachers should develop an understanding of phonological terms and work to provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum in reading and writing that is attainable but challenging.  Educators need to develop strategies for preventing reading difficulties to begin with. Libraries or resource centers should have extensive and varied resources.

Learning should be a fun process that instills a desire to learn even more.  If we all work together, we can accomplish this.

The Significant Effort Of Jewish Education Towards Children

Early childhood education is not all about providing the right experiences at the right stage of child's development but also a guide for preschool teachers and home-schooling parents to give preschools student the best start in life. . Preschool curriculum activities should provide a struc
fff
tured, fun, and natural approach to early childhood education.

The supportive families and faculty members have to work together with community to develop bright future of the students to attain maximum potential from them and develop them as lifelong learner. The environment is well maintained and helpful for students to develop high morals of the life.

The basic foundation of Hillel Jewish education system is based on torah mishamayim. The Hillel program is grounded by the three primary concepts of Torah, Avodah or Prayer and Gimilut Chassadim or Charity.

One of primary objectives is to instill a deep knowledge, understanding and ability to analyze the Torah in order to find within it practical everyday lessons. These include the pleasure of such basic concepts as pride versus humility, materialism versus spirituality, Lashon Hara versus productive speech and all of which students may identify with as conventional norms.

Hillel education system shows how the torah is an essential guide at various stages of life at regular interval of the study. From various stages of life, it supports people in their roles of child, sibling, parent, spouse, as well as school roles of student, teacher, and administrator. It is even present in the daily interactions of business world. Hillel students will learn the secular values and importance of torah in daily life.

Hebrew language has also significant part in the Hillel's experience. In addition to serving as an key tool for the study of the written and oral Torah, it also is taught for the purpose of communication with Jews in Israel and those who inhabit in diverse communities around the world. It serves as a window to contemporary Israeli culture and society, strengthening vibrant Zionistic community.

Hillel teaches an individual, the communal process of prayer, as it is described in the Code of Jewish Law.  As Judaism emphasizes the need for man to communicate with G-D, Hillel teaches students to praise G-D, to ask Him for achievement of their needs and then to offer Him thanks.

This is satisfactory for every parent to imagine and to see their child who has high moral values and even confident towards life. They will also gain good self-esteem, good thinking skills, well developed senses and awareness , creativity and able to socialize, read, write and communicate ideas. Isn't it a fantastic way for overall growth of a child?

Teaching Young Children Good Virtues

Children are a precious gift from God who bless the lives of the families that they are born into. From the time that they are small and innocent, infants rely on the love and guidance that they receive at home to help them know right from wrong. As they being to walk, toddlers explore their world and discover all sorts of things that stay with them as they prepare for kindergarten. Learning to speak and communicate with parents and siblings, small children often mimic the words and language that they hear from care givers and people that are watching over them.

Understanding that the early development of every tot is important, teachers and staff at a Christian preschool can assist parents in providing a safe and educational environment, with instructors and staff who care about what material and influences that are filling the minds of small children, as they interact with grownups and others who they come in contact with. Through curriculum that gives students a creative and fun opportunity to play as they learn, parents are comforted in knowing that whenever they are not around, their little ones are being prepared for their formal education by being taught the values of the gospel through a Christian worldview.

Knowing that they are being well cared for and nurtured in a setting that is founded in the principles of faith, parents are giving their children a head start on their education by allowing them to explore the universe outside their home with the help of teachers who are committed to delivering a quality preschool experience that forms a lasting foundation for the young lives that are entrusted to their care.

Newborns Are Young Children Learning Too

As a mother of three beautiful children, I still find it amazing how quickly children learn. For me, the amazing thing is to know how much a newborn child can understand. From the minute they are born, they are starting the learning process. Starting a new life can be scary for adults and how much they have to learn. Imagine it from a newborns point of few. Going from the security of the womb into the big, wide-open world has to be terrifying. They have to start learning how to cope immediately.

From their very first cry, newborn children have to learn how to communicate with the world. They have to learn right away how to let their parents know that they are hungry, tired, need to be changed, or just need to be loved. If their little minds were not constantly going, they would never be able to develop the communications to survive as a young one. It is unfathomable how our minds work, especially at that young of an age.

Then as they grow, these young individuals develop their own personalities. They can use this to understand other peoples emotions and feelings. They understand when something has changed or when something is wrong. The young children in this world are constantly gaining knowledge and learning what to do with the information they are gathering.

As parents, we need to take advantage of this vast development. A major way of doing this is by constantly talking with our young children as if they understand everything that we are saying. Amazingly, they understand more than what we usually give them credit for. Young children learn more language and vocabulary within the first three years of their life. By constantly hearing their parents and others around them communicate, they will learn and understand how to communicate as well.

Another major opportunity we have as parents, is to read to our children every day. Especially when they are very young, children need to hear adventures. They love to see the brightly colored pages and listen to the different emotions that you bring forth when you are reading to them. As early as day one, it is important to start this routine. It helps the minds and vocabulary of young children begin to grow. They will also become excited about learning to read.

I started talking and reading with my children the day I brought them home from the hospital. My older children love to read. They love to listen to me read by changing my voice to match the characters in the book and the suspense that is brought with each new adventure. It is great to watch and listen to them as they try to make the dramatizations when they are reading to me.

It is never too early to start helping your children learn how to read. The patience and quality time you give, will pay off just by watching your children develop and grow. Watching the young children as they begin to recognize certain words and the excitement they have when they can read the words on their own is simply breath-taking.

Not only is teaching your child the importance of reading rewarding to the child, but it is rewarding to you as well. Seeing the joy and smiles that come from children that love to read is a wonderful thing. It helps us as parents to know that we are doing a great job and we are wonderful teachers to our children. They will grow up knowing that we were there for them throughout all the great storybook adventures. One day, they might even pass the same adventures on to their children. It is definitely worth every minute.

The Importance of Teaching Your Children Goal Setting

Life is all about achieving potential, and in order to do that, everyone must have goals to which they can aspire. That is an important lesson to teach your children, and one that will serve them very well in their adult years. As a parent, you want to ensure that your child has a secure future, teaching them to set goals is one way of ensuring that.

What valuable life lessons can you teach your children by helping them to set goals? Goals provide motivation. Perhaps your child has shown the desire to learn a musical instrument or take up a particular sport. You can help them to set a goal of achieving this is 6 months or 1 year, whatever is reasonable. The important thing is to ensure that your child enjoys the journey towards that goal. Having a goal will provide the motivation they need to press on, especially during times of frustration, when they might be tempted to give up.

Having goals emphasizes the importance of hard work and perseverance. It is possible that your child will become frustrated many times before they reach their goal. Your job is to encourage them and cheer them on towards the goal. Offer the support they need when they become discouraged. Help them to understand that it takes time to reach the destination, it does not happen overnight. If they do not give up, then at the end of the day they will feel a great sense of accomplishment, and will have learnt an important life lesson.

Goals help them to become organized. Plans must be put in place in order for goals to be achieved. For instance, for a small child, a goal can be as simple as ensuring that toys are put away after use. In order to do this, they will need to have storage boxes for the toys. Another goal might be to ensure that their school bags are packed and organized each night, in preparation for the next day of school. Of course children do learn by example, therefore, it is a good idea that you also practice the traits that you would like your child to adopt.

Goals improve their ability to focus. There is nothing like having a plan to give you a well needed head start. They learn how important it is to keep their eye on the prize, and not become distracted. With a goal in view, their efforts are concentrated towards achieving that particular objective. There is no question of them being side tracked by peripheral concerns, which will not assist them in achieving their goal.

When you first give your child a goal, get them involved and make it an easy one. Then you can give them a more difficult one the next time. As each goal is reached, they will gain confidence and their aspirations will become higher. It will also help them in solving problems they might come across, because they are always obstacles on the way to achieving goals.

Big Children - Kids' Song

Update: June7, 2009, I had written the video as a video response seen in some children's songs above video, I have a PM to the person who had the channel saying that they remove my video for it is managed by Pro, hate it, some people reading who do not want the statement at the end of the video that says, "Stop having children in political and religious conflicts are involved." They even advised me a note at the beginning of the video you added says: "They show, as in Palestine, children arealways taught early to enter into the political and religious conflicts. "Then I realized that the person tell me not to do wrong and more people I wanted to come clear here. As an Arab Muslim, I would never say something like that in Palestine are not always taught children early to the political and give religious conflicts, they are forced by Zionists you in political and religious conflicts, they have no choice, believe me, NONE taught our children how to sing a song, exceptone thing, their miserable lives and killed in cold blood every day. I was expecting sympathy from this person have to live for our children no right, in peace, but it seems that our children do not even have the right to sing! The way some Westerners think makes me think they have no feelings, that is not true, it is only because their children are not killed every day or they would know what we mean. This video is not encouraging children to hate, it shows that there is a...

Brains, Children and Piano

All that matters is your child at the piano. It does not matter what other people think, believe, what others expect, even what the piano teacher is irrelevant.

What matters is that your child enjoys the chance to experience playing the piano, however modest, and what they are able to do. Also tried the piano is a success.

Looking at the children on the piano as a group, with statistical expectations, the child will live up to someone ideally a musician isactually harmful to the child.

Nobody in their right mind expected that their children play at Carnegie Hall: What we need is DIYers and lovers, pianists and superstars.

Let me assure you that if your child has what is taking place to play it at Carnegie Hall, it will be so obvious that no one will miss in the piano business of its cue. The number of children who are in the cards for them so little that it is not even a real number.

Remove all wildgifted children, share it by 10,000, and then one off. This is a child has a 1% chance of a successful career as a piano soloist. But all children are properly fed, have a chance to play at 100% to simple songs on the piano, feeling great about it and supplement their general education and intellectual abilities.

It is more productive to think in terms of your child as an individual. Let's get that individual child to play as best they can, without stress, without wildly unrealisticExpectations.

In fact, the growing point, early childhood music education skills, but the exposure, the intellectual and abstract terms is connected in the music that contribute to their heads.

To the contention that the piano must demonstrate lessons for children to increase mental abilities, we look at the human brain itself.

The brain, divided into two sides, each hand controls the opposite side of the brain. The left brain controls the right hand, while theright brain controls the left hand.

The two sides "speak" to each other over a vast highway of nerves and ganglia as a "corpus callosum." The reason is that the piano is so beneficial for children intellectually, that the piano with both hands at work in a similar way, forcing the brain to use at the same time, both halves of the brain. There is very little activity on the ground that the "exciting corpus" such as music and piano.

And so the piano activity produces demonstrably betterHandwriting, better math skills more abstract skills and higher self-esteem, all that talk by the two sides of the brain with each other, over and over again, until the nerve path is physically thickened.

That's right, there is a concrete result in the brain of your child as a result of playing the piano, even attempting to play the piano. It is a known medical fact that the "bar" (the connection between two nerve cells of the brain side) of musicians up to 90% greater than that of people whonot musicians. And starting at the piano at an early age, those benefits in the first years of life.

So, if your child is not destined for the Carnegie Hall, they are still determined to know to enjoy, appreciate and create music. And have a thick bar!

The saddest part of music education today is that there are piano lessons, as it always has been, do not produce the candidate for the Carnegie Hall, complete with polished and try to maintain people, the piano, the best of their gameAbility.

Children who could, with a little care, all the advantages of a piano are made to gain education, to feel like failures because they do not live up to a curriculum developed, produced hundreds of years ago, and for professionals.

It is time to let children of the children and not rob them of the benefits of the piano, because they do not fit the wrong idea of teacher performance.

To see the start of the search on the piano from the perspective of the child.

Fall Activities For the Preschool Classroom & Preschool Children

School-age children are back in school and in the autumn is here for most of us. What can we as parents, educators and Early Childhood Home Care provider to do?

Get the children into a "school" as routine. This will help our children learn routine, and help to equip them better when they begin primary school.

If you are on a day-care opportunities are the focus of this work has a routine to work for them, such as preparing for the breaks, lunch, etc. If you are at home or in search of aChange in daily routine, here is an example idea.

Selected dates:

8.30-9.00 snack, clean-up, books and puzzles

9.00-10.00 Outside free play and games

10.00-10.15 bathroom routine *

3.30-4.30 Outside free play

4.30-5.30 free play, parents picked up

* The bathroom routines are set up throughout the day for all children to go to the toilet, so many children have to avoid all different times throughout the day, which goes toBut of course, if a child had to go to the bathroom during this period between the time they would go.

This schedule may result in an apparently easiest for you and your group that is in your settings, but the main thing is that if these routines and schedules are adhered closely to be changed everyday, children become familiar with routines and structures, and has thus an easier time when entering primary school.

Even if you are a parent at home with only your own children,Planning your day is a great thing to share with your children, how it can benefit them in the same way.
